Passage: John 13:6-10*

6. And so He came to Simon Peter. He said to Him, "Lord, do You wash my feet?"

7. Jesus answered and said to him, "What I do you do not realize now, but you shall understand hereafter."

8. Peter said to Him, "Never shall You wash my feet!" Jesus answered him, "If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me."

9. Simon Peter said to Him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head."

10. Jesus said to him, "He who has bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you."

Questions

1. Why would foot-washing (and not whole body washing) be necessary at the end of the day?

2. Why did Peter object when Jesus moved to wash his feet?

3. Would you be willing to allow Jesus to wash your feet?

Practical help

There is a beautiful symbolism behind Jesus’ washing of the disciples’ feet. After walking around on Palestinian streets all day, feet in sandals got pretty yucched up. Dirt, grime, garbage — you name it, all littered the streets of Jerusalem.

The disciples didn’t need to have a complete bath, because they bathed regularly enough to stay clean — except for the feet. The feet got soiled on a daily basis.

Just so, the disciples had been "cleansed" from their sin "once and for all" when they placed their trust in Jesus for salvation. The foot-washing pictures the repeated need God’s children have to get cleaned up after they sin.

The early Christians sinned, and needed a means to experience God’s cleansing after they dirtied themselves. News flash. Christians still sin! And the same means is available to you and to me when we sin that was available to Peter, James and John when they sinned: confession.

1 John 1:9 tells us that "if we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous for forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." What should you do if you have recently fallen into porn’s trap? Submit to the foot-washing ministry of your Savior. Allow Him to clean you up. Go to Him and tell him that you fell in the mud.

He will wrap Himself with a towel, dip a washrag in a basin and remove the dirt from your conscience and wipe the slate clean. He loves you that much!
