Passage:
Hebrews 11:8-10*
8. By faith Abraham, when
he was called, obeyed by going out to a place which he
was to receive for an inheritance; and he went out,
not knowing where he was going.
9. By faith he lived as an alien
in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, dwelling
in tents with Isaac and Jacob, fellow heirs of the
same promise;
10. for he was looking for the
city which has foundations, whose architect and
builder is God.
Questions
1. Abraham is singled out
here as a man of great faith. For what does the author
of this passage commend him?
2. Have you ever felt as if you
were being asked to journey to a land you have never
seen? Does quitting your involvement with pornography
seem like that kind of journey?
Practical
help
Abraham was called by God
to leave the land in which he was living (the city of
Ur in Chaldea) and travel to Canaan, the land of
promise. Scary stuff. He had never seen Palestine
before, although he had heard about it. He was secure
living in the land of Chaldea secure but
surrounded by the religious pornography of idolatry.
Pulling up stakes and moving to Canaan meant leaving
friends, family, security and wealth. It meant
trusting that God was telling the truth when He said
that Canaan was better than Chaldea.
You are being called by God to
leave the land of porn. Scary stuff. You like it
there, it is well known, secure, enjoyable (at times).
But the land of porn is the moral equivalent of
Chaldea. God says that He has a land flowing with milk
and honey waiting for you, a land of freedom. But
youll never find it while youre logged on
to porn.com. No, first you have to pull up stakes and
move away from that land and go where God points you.
That involves faith, the one thing that
impresses God (see Hebrews 11:6).
