Passage:
John
8:31-36*
31. Jesus therefore was
saying to those Jews who had believed Him, "If you
abide in My word, then you are truly disciples of
Mine;
32. and you shall know the
truth, and the truth shall make you free."
33. They answered Him, "We are
Abraham's offspring, and have never yet been enslaved
to anyone; how is it that You say, 'You shall become
free'?"
34. Jesus answered them, "Truly,
truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the
slave of sin.
35. "And the slave does not
remain in the house forever; the son does remain
forever.
36. "If therefore the Son shall
make you free, you shall be free indeed.
Questions
1. The passage in John 8
records a conversation between Jesus and some of His
converts. What promise does He give to them in verse
32?
2. His listeners didn't "get"
what Jesus was saying. They didn't have a clue that
they were in any sense enslaved. In what sense does
Jesus say that they were enslaved (see verse
34)?
3. What is the final promise of
this passage (from verses 35-36)?
Practical
Help
Jesus speaks here of
freedom from sin. He claims that a person is set free
from sin when they come to know Him (and He is
the truth!). That is true in two senses.
First, when
anyone turns to Christ in faith, he is immediately
set free from the condemnation of God for his sin.
Jesus forgives once and for all!
Second, that is true
in that the better a person gets to know Jesus, the
more freedom he will experience.
Freedom to live an open life,
freedom to say "No" to temptation, freedom to stay
away from Internet porn is all connected to our
growing knowledge of Jesus, who is the Truth. If you
want pornography to be out of your life, there is no
better remedy than the Truth.
Remember the truth about porn
it saps vitality, it brings shame and guilt, it
isn't loving, it doesn't bring glory to God.
And remember the True One
Jesus. Run to Him. He is waiting for you with open
arms!
