Passage: Matthew 23:1-7*

1. Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to His disciples,

2. saying: "The scribes and the Pharisees have seated themselves in the chair of Moses;

3. therefore all that they tell you, do and observe, but do not do according to their deeds; for they say things and do not do them.

4. "They tie up heavy burdens and lay them on men’s shoulders, but they themselves are unwilling to move them with so much as a finger.

5. "But they do all their deeds to be noticed by men; for they broaden their phylacteries and lengthen the tassels of their garments.

6. "They love the place of honor at banquets and the chief seats in the synagogues,

7. and respectful greetings in the market places, and being called Rabbi by men.

Questions

Practical help

Any Christian who looks at pornography is a hypocrite. Sound harsh?

But stop and think. If you say you stand with Christ and your actions don’t agree with what you say, what else are you, but a hypocrite?

I have been a hypocrite many times in my life (sometimes many times a day!), if that is any comfort to you. And when I discover that I am guilty I have a choice — run and hide, or run to God and confess.

Those who hide take on a life of pretending that nothing is wrong. This phoniness only seems to look good to the one whose faking it, but to others, it stinks. Perhaps that is why when you tell people about God, it doesn’t ring true. If God is real, they wonder, why is this one who is telling me about Him living such a shallow and phony life?

In the next few studies we are going to be looking deeply at our hypocritical ways, and as we do, I hope you will not forget a very important verse:

"If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." — 1 John 1:9
