Passage: Psalm 4:7*
You have filled my heart with greater joy than when their grain and
new wine abound.
Questions
1. What category of pleasure does David discount compared to the
knowledge of God?
2. How can we experience this joy?
Practical help
Many people say the Bible is irrelevant to their ordinary lives
because the book doesn't describe modern times. But it doesn't take too much imagination
to apply David's take on sensual pleasures -- food and wine -- to our own.
He writes that God has given him more joy than these material goodies. The news should
encourage porn viewers; we tend to think the joy of the Lord would take a distant second
to an X-rated flick. But how can we experience the reality David mentions?
Answer: The medium is the message. David's psalms were meant to be sung. If we spent more
time in worship -- and less time watching porn -- perhaps we'd find ourselves saying along
with David, "You have filled my heart with greater joy than when their grain and new
wine abound."
