Passage: Mark 4:24-25*

24. And He was saying to them, “Take care what you listen to. By your standard of measure it will be measured to you; and more will be given you besides.

25. “For whoever has, to him more shall be given; and whoever does not have, even what he has shall be taken away from him.”

Questions

1. Are you responsible for what you believe, even if you haven’t given it much thought?

2. When you judge others, are you harder on them than you are on yourself? According to verse 24, what would be the problem if this is the case?

Practical help

At first, you might think it’s a good thing that you will be measured by your own standard, but think again. The first part of Romans 6:23 makes it clear that the wages of sin is death. This means that, if you can remember one thing you have done wrong in your life, you have just condemned yourself.

If the Bible is true and you have been created by God, is it not reasonable to think that He is in control of your life and death, and can at any time have you to stand before Him to explain your decisions and actions in life? You don’t have to understand how He will be able to give you life after death for the same reason you don’t have to understand how it is you are living right now.

Fortunately, Romans 6:23 goes on to say, “But the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” And in Acts 16:31, Paul tells a very frightened man, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved….” If you trust these words and commit your life to Jesus as your Savior, then today’s passage in Mark is good news indeed. For the believer, your standard is Jesus instead of your performance. He is your sin-bearing substitute. And if you have Jesus as your Lord, then verse 25 tells you in addition that there is a whole lot more good coming your way.

Don’t be fooled thinking that porn is fulfilling or lasting. Come to the end of your life and even what little enjoyment it has brought you will also be taken away. It’s a dead end so turn around and go back to the One who loved you enough to die for you.
