Passage: Mark 4:26-29*

26. And [Jesus] was saying, “The kingdom of God is like a man who casts seed upon the soil;

27. and he goes to bed at night and gets up by day, and the seed sprouts and grows — how, he himself does not know.

28. The soil produces crops by itself; first the blade, then the head, then the mature grain in the head.

29. But when the crop permits, he immediately puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.”

Question

What are 500 things you use every day that you couldn’t fix if they broke. (Just kidding, try maybe 10 and you’ll get the point.)

Practical help

The world we see, hear, touch, taste and smell seems to be more real to us than thoughts we think or ideas we contemplate. But life is more than what’s out there, isn’t it? Jesus seems to be telling us that the kingdom of God is a mysterious thing. It’s real, but not solid in the sense that wood is. Yet it is more real than things we think are absolutely real.

The kingdom of God comes to us under the radar so to speak, invading our worlds and challenging us to rethink what is real and what is an illusion.

Think about the last science class you took and recall that matter is made up of atoms. Furthermore, we learned that atoms are made up of subatomic particles. But let’s not stop there. If we plunge deeper into the mystery we enter the world of sub-sub-atomic particles. At some point, we discover that we just don’t know any more about what makes matter what it is. I guess the funny thing about atoms is the more you study them, the less real them seem to become.

Now get out your telescope and look deep into space. Or look over an astronomer’s shoulder as he or she attempts to interpret transmissions from Hubbell. What's out there? A growing universe? What is it growing into? Space? No space? Nobody knows. If this universe started with a big bang, what came before the bang? What’s mostly out there? Not much we call matter, I’m afraid. Just more space, more nothing, more mystery.

In light or our knowledge of science, let return to Jesus’ parable. Has it’s truth really changed after 2000 years?

Here’s my point, I tell you that Jesus died for you and that according to the Bible this somehow is suppose to enable you to have eternal life, if you will just trust Him. But you can press me and say, “Explain how this works... in detail.” I will be able to describe what I know from what I have read, perhaps with a few personal anecdotes. At some point I think we both know I will hit a wall beyond which I don’t have a clue why and how it works. In the end, it’s God’s idea, not mine. But hey, why should I be able to explain spiritual realities at a level deeper than you can explain to me “natural” realities?

You can choose to distract yourself with pornography and miss truly living, or you can seek to meet God in the Bible. Pick one up, start reading with an open mind, and see what happens.
