Passage: Luke 1:11-13; 24-25*

11. And an angel of the Lord appeared to [Zacharias], standing to the right of the altar of incense.

12. And Zacharias was troubled when he saw him, and fear gripped him.

13. But the angel said to him, "Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your petition has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will give him the name John (the Baptist).....

24. And after these days Elizabeth his wife became pregnant; and she kept herself in seclusion for five months, saying,

25. "This is the way the Lord has dealt with me in the days when He looked with favor upon me, to take away my disgrace among men."

Practical help

Many people are aware that sex is wonderful. Many are not aware that sex is a wonderful gift FROM GOD. Don’t miss the fact that in addition to supernaturally enabling Elizabeth to conceive a child, God also fully intended Zacharias and Elizabeth to have sexual relations with each other in order for this conception to take place.

A key to taming lust and defeating an urge for pornography is understanding the greatness and the holiness of the gift of sex. The Bible is not against sex! It was God’s idea from start to finish. His intention that Zacharias and Elizabeth become one flesh to produce a son, John the Baptist, is proof that within the context of a covenant relationship between a man and a woman, sexual union is blessed by God.

Next time sexual thoughts flood your mind, stop and praise God for this gift He has given. Don’t retreat to being ashamed OR to shameful acts (like viewing erotic pictures on the Internet). Instead WORSHIP GOD.
