Passage: Hosea 8:7*

"They sow the wind and reap the whirlwind. The stalk has no head; it will produce no flour. Were it to yield grain, foreigners would swallow it up."

Questions

1. What does this verse mean?

2. How can we apply its message to pornography?

Practical help

The Old Testament writers could turn a phrase. When the apostle Paul would later scribble the commonplace "you reap what you sow," Hosea preemptively topped him with better imagery and a clever play on words: "They sow the wind and reap the whirlwind." Score one for Hosea.

Still, the two passages communicate the same message about the typical causality of life. Good tends toward good, and porn tends toward bad. Many believers reject that simple message. Porn would never consume their thoughts ... or cost them their job ... or destroy their relationships. After all, bad tends toward ... good. Right?

Wrong, answers Hosea. Flee pornography in every form — Web, print, audio, imagination. Or look out for the whirlwind.
