Passage: Psalm 51:17*

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

Questions

1. What principle does this verse illuminate?

2. Have you seen this principle in action on the issue of pornography?

Practical help

So you indulged in Web porn — again. Now God wants nothing to do with you. Your prayers smack against the ceiling and go no farther. Maybe you can pray again when you get your act together.

And if you believe all that nonsense, reread Psalm 51:17.

Brokenhearted over your weakness for smut? God loves your brokenness. Our failings remind us of our need for him, driving our typically proud selves back into the waiting embrace of our Father.

Or it should remind us and drive us. If your brokenness leads you away from God, there's something else to glean from this verse: the offering up of your fractured soul to the Lord as an offering. Pray, "God, I barely feel able to approach you. But please accept my failings over pornography and help me resolve to live with integrity."

The verse tells us how God will respond to such an expression of brokenness and contrition — with acceptance.
