Passage: Hebrews 10:16*

"This is the covenant I will make with them after that time, says the Lord. I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds."

Questions

1. What does promise mean?

2. How can it help us overcome an addiction to Web porn?

Practical help

If someone could pry open your heart — figuratively, of course — what would he see? Some Christians would say they'd find the scrawls of a deceitful heart without hope of cure. God sees the opposite: His good laws inscribed on your heart.

The confusion likely arises because many believers read Old Testament passages without filtering them through the new revelation of the New Testament. And the new revelation is startling: "I will put my laws in their hearts." That's what Jesus did when we placed our trust in him. He transformed our core nature, replacing bad with good.

This new reality calls for a different approach to Web porn. We do not fight against ourselves to resist it. Our deepest self is in alignment with God and in opposition to Web porn. No, we battle an exterior tempter and our old bad habits.

This should not come as surprise even to fans of the Old Testament. The most famous bad-heart verse comes from Jeremiah (17:9). And so does this good-heart verse (31:53) quoted later in Hebrews.
