Passage: 2 Samuel 12:20*

So David arose from the ground, washed, anointed himself, and changed his clothes; and he came into the house of the Lord and worshiped. Then he came to his own house, and when he requested, they set food before him and he ate.

Questions

1. What had to happen in David’s heart before he could move on after his sin?

2. What precious things had David sacrificed in order to keep his sin hidden?

Practical help

David’s sin with Bathsheba had such devastating effects: adultery, murder, a cover-up and lost intimacy with God to name a few. Finally the confrontation with the prophet Nathan came. David was broken and ashamed. Then the child that David fathered died. God had spoken, and David could no longer hide the truth of what he had done.

As today’s verse shows us, David did not continue to dwell on his sin. Even though he had sacrificed his close relationship with God for an entire year to hide his sin, David returned to God, and God forgave him, opening the way to begin life anew. What an amazing picture of grace!

Where has your struggle with Web porn taken you? What have you sacrificed to keep it hidden? Have you ditched intimacy with your spouse? Do you avoid transparent and honest relationships with your friends — or even closeness with God?

Don’t let it go on any longer. Sure, it’s a struggle to leave it behind and disclose the truth about the stranglehold smut has had on you. But when we return to God in humility and brokenness and accept his forgiveness, He gives us a fresh start. He’ll give you a fresh start. To know forgiveness as David did, first admit your sins to God and turn to him. Then move ahead with a new and fresh approach to life by His grace.
