Passage: Psalm 42:5*

Gather all the plunder of the town into the middle of the public square and completely burn the town and all its plunder as a whole burnt offering to the LORD your God. It is to remain a ruin forever, never to be rebuilt.

Questions

1. How do the writers of this passage aim to raise their spirits?

2. What can we learn from it?

Practical help

Sometimes Christians sound like spiritual schizophrenics — thinking opposing ideas at different times. Take this passage. In it, the Sons of Korah write that they are going to boost their own spirits, while elsewhere in Scripture such rah-rah talk gets the negative label of acting in the the "flesh."

What's a believer to do? Let's just stick with the Sons and work out the theological implications of predestination and free will when we hit Romans (on Dec. 31). If you're downhearted about an addiction to Web porn, the Sons pull no punches: Encourage yourself. Try their method, focusing on God and praising him. Perhaps you'll pick yourself up by your spiritual bootstraps.
