Passage: Ecclesiastes 5:10*

Whoever loves money never has money enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income. This too is meaningless.

Questions

1. Why is the love of money ultimately a futile passion?

2. How is our love of pornography like materialism?

Practical help

If a wine company can take liberties with Ecclesiastes — leaving out all of the negative lyrics for the song "Turn Turn Turn" — then I can, too. So remove the word "money" in this verse and insert the word "pornography." I submit that not much changes.

That's because hoarding money and guzzling sex meet at the intersection of passion and significance. Unfortunately, the writer of Ecclesiastes acts like a big red light in the middle of our superhighway. He asks us to do something unusual: Take our eyes off of the road and focus on the eternal.

Of course, we already know this. As with money, porn is never enough. Opt out of the system while you're still ahead. Diminishing returns — in every sense of the phrase — are the only alternative.
