Passage: Titus 2:12-14*

12 [Grace] teaches us to say "No" to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age,

13 while we wait for the blessed hope — the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ,

14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.

Questions

1. Why would grace teach us to say “No” to worldly passions?

2. Have you ever used grace to avoid pornography?

Practical help

Few pastors or Christian publications seem to invoke grace as an aid to holy living. For good or ill, the messages we hear usually fall more on our side of the work spectrum than God’s. And yet Paul admonishes Titus to heed the schoolmaster of grace — not to “buck up.”

Not bad advice. When you’re next tempted, meditate on God’s favor. Perhaps Paul’s words will come to pass. Christ may begin to fashion in you a pure heart — one eager to do good.
